CAMPUS SUMMARY
Founded in 1949, the University of San Diego is an independent, Roman Catholic institution dedicated to providing a values-based education rooted in the liberal arts. USD is known for its commitment to teaching and takes pride in the personalized approach it brings to the educational process. The campus, built in Spanish Renaissance style, is situated on 180 acres of mesa overlooking San Diego's beautiful Mission Bay.

Located on the southern tip of California, San Diego is the state's second-largest city. With an average daily temperature of 64 degrees in February and 76 degrees in August, the area is perfect for biking, jogging, tennis, softball, and all aquatic sports. San Diego is noted for an outstanding zoo, museums, Spanish missions, Sea World, and major sports programs.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL PROGRAMS
USD enrolls 4800 undergraduates and 2250 graduate students who choose from a wide variety of programs. Beyond the traditional arts, sciences, and humanities, USD has developed some exceptional programs in business, engineering, marine science, international relations, and health sciences.

All freshmen begin their academic careers in USD's Freshman Preceptorial program. The preceptor, instructing in a supportive, small-group environment, has frequent contact with each advisee and continues advising throughout the student's general education program until the student declares a major and the responsibility for advising shifts to the department chair. All of USD's programs are built solidly on the liberal arts, developing critical thinking skills through an emphasis on fundamental disciplines, written and oral communication, and an understanding of the past.
